Reducing the populations of Pigeons

In our last article we talked about the different bird control techniques that be used by pest control companies or individuals to try and get a handle on a building being overrun by pigeons. We concluded that pigeon control deterrents were the best way to take care of the situation. Today we will discuss how to use the deterrents to reduce the population of pigeons in a given area.

The deterrents are used to move the birds from one particular building. Of course you can take the same actions on several buildings, but the point is that the pigeons will still be in the area, just not on your building with any luck. There are two main types of deterrents that can be installed and we will talk a little about each of them.

Netting- Nets or mesh can be installed around the roosting areas of the pigeons so that the birds cannot get back to their nest. Depending on the height of the building this is something that can be done fairly easily and also be cost effective. The issue with this type of deterrent is that there is a certain amount maintenance required to keep the netting or mesh free from holes where the pigeons could get right back to the roosting areas.
Spikes- The spikes work much in the same way the netting works. You install spikes throughout the roosting area so the pigeons cannot land on those portions of the building. This generally will take a professional to install and will cost more than the netting, however, it will not need as much maintenance.

In the next article we will talk about the source of the problem. Really the only way to completely solve the problem is to correct the source of the problem. In almost all cases that source is the public feeding the pigeons.
